Guest Post – 5 Cheap & Chic Makeup Tips Good Enough for Professionals

My ex-co worker and dear friend Nivene is ALL about clothes, makeup and her personal favorite: nail polish! We were partners on the agency team at my last job and each day she’d come into work looking totally styled from head to toe. She is adorable and asked me to write a blog post for her on fashion which I posted here. Now it is my turn to feature some of her tips and tricks on makeup. Nivene now works for CashNetUSA which is where my blog post was featured last week. Enjoy!

We all want the professional makeup look without the steep price tag. And believe it or not, it doesn’t take a fortune to look great. Just ask any professional makeup artist — they all use cheap tricks at one time or another. With the right tips, you can make your makeup work on any budget. Here are five makeup secrets that will keep your purse full and your face looking fresh!

1. Get more for your buck.

The trick is to buy your foundation, tinted moisturizer or self-tanner a shade or two darker than you would normally wear. Then just mix a small amount of it with your favorite face moisturizer each morning before you apply. Not only will it extend the life of your makeup, but also keep your skin looking nourished and hydrated.

2. Don’t be afraid to ask.

Most cosmetic counters and makeup stores will offer up free samples of their products. In fact, they’re usually more than happy to give you a taste because they think that once you try it, it’ll keep you coming back for more! All you have to do is ask.

3. Use the same product for different purposes.

Need a little color on those cheeks? Forget the blush, use lipstick. Lipstick can easily double as a cream blush. Just dab a few spots on the apples of your cheek and gently rub it in with your fingers. Voila! You’ve got a perfectly rosy complexion.

4. Vaseline is your best friend.

This should be a staple in every girl’s bathroom. Not only is it cheap, it’s also multi-purpose. Use it as eye makeup remover, on chapped lips or as lip gloss, and on dry spots like elbows and knees before applying self-tanner. Those are just some of the many things you can use Vaseline for. And at about $2 a tub, your wallet will thank you.

5. Brighten with baking soda.

Okay so this technically isn’t a makeup trick, but honestly, all the makeup in the world won’t matter if your smile is hard to look at. So besides brushing, flossing, and using mouthwash daily, use baking soda once a week to brighten your teeth. It’s one of the oldest tricks in the book. But hey, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! Why spend $40 worth of whitening strips when you can buy $1 worth of baking soda? It’s a no brainer.
